Assessment 01

The combined bundle

Handset and airtime billed as one monthly figure over twenty-four to thirty-six months, used by most operators.

The case for

Simple to buy, widely available, and it spreads a large purchase without a separate finance application.

The case against

The figure does not reduce when the term ends. Device money continues to be collected on a handset you already own — the largest silent overpayment in British mobile.

The bottom line

Diary the end date at signature and act within days of it: SIM-only, deliberate upgrade, or departure.

If you'd rather ask a person

We are independent: nothing for sale, no access to your account, and we will never ask you for a security code. We will read an offer with you, explain a clause, or talk a switch through.

Assessment 02

The split contract

Device credit and airtime on separate agreements, used by O2 and Sky Mobile.

The case for

The device element genuinely stops at repayment and can be settled early, and both halves appear on the statement — the easiest arithmetic in the market to audit.

The case against

Only the device half stops. The airtime half continues at the same rate until you reduce it, and people who read the total rather than both lines never notice.

The bottom line

Read both lines, diary the device end date, and downgrade the airtime the moment the handset clears.

Assessment 03

Buying outright plus a SIM

Purchase the handset separately and buy airtime on its own.

The case for

Almost always the lowest total cost, with no credit agreement, no end-date trap and complete freedom to change network monthly.

The case against

It requires the money upfront, which is genuinely not available to everyone, and you carry the resale risk yourself.

The bottom line

Use it as the benchmark even if you do not choose it: every bundle must beat the handset outright plus the cheapest good SIM over the same months.

Assessment 04

Upgrades and annual schemes

Mid-term upgrades and recurring-fee schemes offering a new handset every year.

The case for

Convenient, predictable, and appealing if you genuinely want the newest device continuously.

The case against

An upgrade is a new contract restarting the clock, and an annual scheme is a subscription rather than a saving. Cold upgrade calls are also a common fraud vector.

The bottom line

Total any proposal across its full term, multiply annual schemes across three or four years, and always check the app — genuine offers appear inside your account.

Assessment 05

Trade-ins and delivery

The administrative end of the purchase.

The case for

Trade-in programmes are convenient and occasionally aggressive at launch windows; distance-selling rules give online orders a cooling-off period, commonly fourteen days.

The case against

The first trade-in quote is rarely the best, and almost nobody uses the cooling-off period as the trial it is.

Next-day deliveryNeeds your exact variant in stock and an order before the cut-off
Click and collectOften faster where a nearby branch holds the model
Pre-ordersBound by launch schedules
The bottom line

Take two trade-in quotes and erase the device before despatch. Use the returns window to test signal at home and at work, room by room.
