Assessment 01

Why these calls work

Caller ID, personal details and urgency, used together.

The case for

The defence is simple and free: genuine offers appear inside your account, so five seconds in the app settles any call.

The case against

Caller ID is trivially forged and personal details are widely available, so a convincing call is easy to make and hard to distrust in the moment.

Upgrade callsUrgency the app cannot corroborate
Merger migrationNo such process exists on any network
Parcel redelivery textsA small fee link harvesting card details
Satellite activationInvented around genuine free trials
PAC or eSIM feesFree by regulation — the charge is the tell
The bottom line

Treat caller ID as evidence of nothing. Check the app, every time, before responding to anything.

If you'd rather ask a person

We are independent: nothing for sale, no access to your account, and we will never ask you for a security code. We will read an offer with you, explain a clause, or talk a switch through.

Assessment 02

One-time codes

The authentication codes sent by text.

The case for

They are a genuinely strong protection, which is precisely why fraudsters need you to hand them over.

The case against

Social engineering around them is sophisticated, and people read them out under pressure while believing they are being helpful.

The bottom line

No genuine agent, on any network, in any circumstance, needs a code read aloud. Treat every such request as fraud.

Assessment 03

SIM-swap

A number transferred to another device to intercept banking codes.

The case for

It has a clear, recognisable symptom: a handset that loses service without explanation and does not recover.

The case against

People assume a network fault and wait, which is exactly the delay the attack depends on.

The bottom line

Ring the operator's fraud line immediately from a different telephone. Speed materially changes the outcome.

Assessment 04

After a loss

What to do once money has moved.

The case for

Reporting routes are free and effective: 7726 for fraudulent texts, and Action Fraud for the crime reference banks and insurers require.

The case against

Panic produces the wrong order, and evidence gets deleted in embarrassment.

The bottom line

Bank fraud line first, operator fraud team second, Action Fraud third — and retain every message, number and timestamp.
