Assessment 01

The six standard adjustments

Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling, ten seconds of airplane mode, updates, one metre toward a window, then the status page.

The case for

They are free, take two minutes, and close the majority of reported complaints — usually within the first two.

The case against

They will not fix congestion, a mast fault, or a handset too old to support 4G Calling.

The bottom line

Work down the list before spending any money. Leave the first two switched on permanently.

If you'd rather ask a person

We are independent: nothing for sale, no access to your account, and we will never ask you for a security code. We will read an offer with you, explain a clause, or talk a switch through.

Assessment 02

The 3G withdrawals

Three and EE during 2024, O2 during 2025.

The case for

Retiring 3G frees spectrum for 4G and 5G, which improves service for the overwhelming majority of users.

The case against

Older handsets that cannot support 4G Calling have effectively been retired with it, which is a genuine cost to some households.

The bottom line

Enable 4G Calling first — it is usually the entire remedy. Where a device cannot, the device itself has reached the end.

Assessment 03

Logging a fault

Recording dates, times, postcode and what failed.

The case for

A fortnight of records converts a refused claim into a settled one more reliably than any amount of persistence, because it is what an ombudsman actually reviews.

The case against

It requires effort at precisely the moment you are already frustrated.

The bottom line

Start the record on the first bad day, even if you expect the problem to resolve itself.

Assessment 04

Compensation

Goodwill credits for sustained or repeated loss of service.

The case for

They are routinely agreed where a clear dated log exists, and asking costs nothing.

The case against

They are almost never volunteered, and most people never ask.

The bottom line

Report in writing once service returns, attach the log, and ask specifically what goodwill applies to the recorded period.
