Assessment 01

History and ownership

EE was assembled in 2010 from Orange and T-Mobile, launched Britain's first 4G in 2012, and belongs to BT Group, whose consumer services increasingly sit under the EE brand.

Formed2010, from Orange and T-Mobile
First UK 4G2012
OwnerBT Group
Resold by1pMobile, billing per unit consumed
3GWithdrawn during 2024
The case for

Combined spectrum from two operators gave EE a footprint advantage it has never surrendered, and BT's backing funds continuous investment.

The case against

Consolidation means one account and one login now cover mobile, broadband and more — convenient, and a single point of failure if that credential is compromised.

The bottom line

A premium operator with a genuine record behind the price. Protect the account credential as carefully as a banking one.

Assessment 02

Coverage and 5G

EE holds the broadest UK footprint and has topped independent coverage testing more often than any rival.

The case for

It performs comparatively best where rivals thin — motorway corridors, market towns and open countryside — and leads nationally on standalone 5G, which runs on its own modern core rather than leaning on 4G.

The case against

Broadest is not universal: champions have dead postcodes too, and indoor performance still depends on your walls. Standalone 5G remains the smallest layer and needs a recent handset.

The bottom line

Run the checkers at your own postcode rather than trusting the national headline, and audition through 1pMobile — identical masts, negligible cost — before paying premium airtime.

Assessment 03

SIM plans and extras

A tier ladder from small allowances to unlimited, priced above the value operators, with riders attached to larger tiers.

Bundled extrasStreaming and security additions on bigger tiers
Family SIMsAdditional lines earn discounts and shared benefits
UnlimitedUnmetered on the handset; tethering clauses on certain tiers
Budget route1pMobile bills per unit on the identical estate
Annual upgrade schemesA recurring charge for continual device renewal
The case for

Family pricing is genuinely competitive for multi-line households, and the bundled extras are worth counting if you would have bought them anyway.

The case against

Extras you would not have chosen are padding on an already premium price, and annual upgrade schemes are subscriptions rather than savings — the arithmetic only becomes visible across several years.

The bottom line

Price the household rather than the line, count extras at what you would actually pay for them, and multiply any upgrade scheme across three or four years before agreeing.

If you'd rather ask a person

We are independent: nothing for sale, no access to your account, and we will never ask you for a security code. We will read an offer with you, explain a clause, or talk a switch through.

Assessment 04

Phone plans

Conventional combined bundles across twenty-four to thirty-six months.

The case for

Wide handset availability, straightforward trade-in programmes, and the same consumer protections as anywhere.

The case against

Because EE's airtime carries a premium, the out-of-contract period is the most expensive version of that condition in the market. The bill does not fall by itself when the term ends.

The bottom line

Diary the end date at signature and set the reminder a month early. Benchmark every bundle against the handset outright plus the cheapest good SIM, and take two trade-in quotes.

Assessment 05

Pay as you go

EE offers standard prepaid service, and its tenant 1pMobile bills per unit consumed on the identical estate.

The case for

1pMobile is the least expensive route to the country's broadest coverage, and the ideal assessment SIM before committing to premium airtime.

The case against

Per-unit billing becomes expensive very quickly for anyone with a regular data habit, and the feature set is deliberately sparse.

The bottom line

Use it for genuinely light consumption or for testing. If your use is habitual, price a rolling monthly plan instead.

Assessment 06

eSIM

EE's in-app eSIM process is among the most straightforward in the country, with broad flagship support.

The case for

Fast issue and transfer, mature Wi-Fi Calling and 4G Calling support, and ordinary free PAC portability.

The case against

The same invented-fee fraud circulates here as everywhere, and it targets the increasingly valuable single EE credential.

The bottom line

Official channels only, no fees ever, and a unique strong password on the account with every additional protection enabled.

Assessment 07

Broadband and bundles

EE Broadband runs over Openreach infrastructure, with BT's consumer broadband migrating under the EE name and a 4G/5G router option for poorly wired streets.

The case for

For multi-line households this is where EE's value genuinely concentrates: discounts and family-SIM data additions that materially change the total.

The case against

Availability depends on street wiring rather than masts, and single-account convenience creates a perceived barrier at exit. Account migrations have occasionally confused bundled statements.

The bottom line

Price the household as a whole, keep every reference in writing through any migration, and remember the PAC text is unaffected by a bundled bill.

Assessment 08

Roaming

Which regime applies depends on tier and plan generation more than on the brand.

Europe — defaultMost current plans apply a daily charge
Europe — exceptionCertain higher tiers include a pass restoring inclusive roaming, occasionally beyond Europe
Fair useCeilings apply everywhere abroad
Longer tripsA local data eSIM alongside the EE line undercuts daily charges
The case for

Higher tiers can restore inclusive roaming across a wide destination list, which is genuinely valuable for frequent long-haul travellers.

The case against

Most newer plans charge daily, and two customers on the same network can be on entirely different regimes without realising it.

The bottom line

Read your own roaming screen in the app before booking, note the ceiling, and pair a travel eSIM on anything past a few days.

Assessment 09

Fees, the app and support

The EE application is among the fullest in the market — family SIM administration, device unlocking, broadband controls, spend caps, eSIM issue, allowances and billing.

The case for

Comprehensive, well maintained, and the reliable way to verify whether any cold call is genuine.

The case against

Premium pricing throughout, and mid-contract rises have historically been EE's most contested subject with customers.

The bottom line

Judge the post-discount figure, read and photograph the cash-terms rise clause at purchase, and review annually against three rivals.

Assessment 10

When it goes wrong

The universal six adjustments apply, with two EE-specific patterns.

Older handset failing callsThe 2024 3G withdrawal — enable 4G Calling
Poor room in a strong areaBuilding materials — Wi-Fi Calling
Billing irregularityBT-to-EE account migrations
Rural gapBroadest coverage still is not universal
The case for

Diagnosis is straightforward and the app includes strong self-service tools, including spend caps and status information.

The case against

Account migrations have produced billing confusion that is harder to unpick than an ordinary fault, particularly on bundled households.

The bottom line

Complain in writing and retain every reference through any migration — that paperwork is what an ombudsman reviews.

Assessment 11

Your rights

The same statutory framework applies as on every UK network.

The case for

Unconditional PAC or STAC issue, itemised exit sums, cash-terms rise disclosure, and free binding escalation after eight weeks or a deadlock letter.

The case against

Bundled accounts make departure feel weightier, and premium airtime makes delay more expensive than it is elsewhere.

The bottom line

Send the text yourself, act promptly at contract end, and escalate the moment you are entitled to.

Assessment 12

The verdict on EE

Weighing everything above.

The case for

The broadest coverage in Britain and a long run of test wins, the national lead on standalone 5G, strong multi-line and broadband bundles, and one of the best apps in the market.

The case against

Premium prices across the shelf, daily European charges on most newer plans, upgrade schemes that are subscriptions in disguise, and the most expensive out-of-contract drift anywhere.

The bottom line

Buy EE when coverage genuinely decides your week — and diary the end date the same day. If your area is well served by everyone, the same money buys considerably more data elsewhere, and 1pMobile sells you EE's masts either way.
