Assessment 01

Activation and issue

Your plan written into the handset's embedded chip rather than supplied on plastic.

The case for

Live within minutes from the operator's own app or website, with no waiting for post and no adapter trays. Support is broad across recent iPhones and Android flagships.

The case against

Support differs by operator — Sky Mobile's arrived later than the mast owners' and still varies by handset — so it cannot be assumed.

The bottom line

Confirm your exact model with your own operator before ordering if eSIM matters to you.

If you'd rather ask a person

We are independent: nothing for sale, no access to your account, and we will never ask you for a security code. We will read an offer with you, explain a clause, or talk a switch through.

Assessment 02

Fees

What issue and transfer actually cost.

The case for

Nothing, on every UK network, through official channels — including reissue after a lost handset, because the number belongs to the account rather than the chip.

The case against

A substantial fraud industry has grown around this, inventing “transfer services”, “activation fees” and “migration charges”.

The bottom line

Refuse every fee without exception. The charge itself is the identifying characteristic, regardless of how much the caller appears to know about you.

Assessment 03

Number retention

Keeping your number when moving between operators.

The case for

Identical to plastic: text PAC to 65075, free, valid thirty days. Digital and physical SIMs are treated the same in law.

The case against

People assume a special digital process exists, which is exactly the gap fraudsters exploit.

The bottom line

Use the ordinary PAC text and nothing else. There is no separate digital porting service.

Assessment 04

Dual-SIM travel

Running a domestic line and a travel data profile together.

The case for

Past a few days abroad, a cheap local or regional data eSIM alongside your UK line comfortably beats daily roaming charges — and the whole arrangement reverses in seconds on return.

The case against

It requires a supporting handset, and you must remember to route data through the correct profile on landing.

The bottom line

Buy the travel profile before flying, enable it for data only, keep the UK line for calls and texts, and delete it when you get home.
