Assessment 01

Buying by estimate

Choosing an allowance from a guess or a shop assistant's recommendation.

The case for

It is quick, and an over-sized allowance never produces an overage charge.

The case against

The recorded gap between estimate and actual consumption is commonly around a factor of two, which over a two-year term is a substantial sum.

The bottom line

Read three months of real usage in your app instead, and buy that average plus modest headroom.

If you'd rather ask a person

We are independent: nothing for sale, no access to your account, and we will never ask you for a security code. We will read an offer with you, explain a clause, or talk a switch through.

Assessment 02

Unlimited plans

Unmetered handset data domestically.

The case for

No meter to watch and no overage risk — genuinely honest at home on all four mast owners, and priced competitively by Three in particular.

The case against

Tethering is capped on some plan generations, extreme outliers can be briefly queued at saturated masts, and fair-use ceilings apply abroad.

The bottom line

Buy it only where measured usage justifies it, and read the tethering clause on your exact tier if a laptop is involved.

Assessment 03

Congestion

Full signal bars with no throughput.

The case for

It is a capacity condition rather than a coverage failure, which means it is predictable — transport hubs, venues and city centres in the early evening.

The case against

No handset setting resolves it, and it is invisible on every coverage map. It is documented most extensively on O2 and inherited by the brands reselling its capacity.

The bottom line

Test at your own station at rush hour before signing, and diagnose by symptom rather than by signal bars.

Assessment 04

Reducing consumption

Free adjustments before buying a larger allowance.

The case for

Dropping video quality one step inside a streaming application typically halves consumption unnoticed on a handset screen, and restricting backups to fixed broadband removes another large slice.

The case against

People rarely think of it, because the upsell is easier to reach than the settings menu.

The bottom line

Make these adjustments first. They frequently remove the need for a larger allowance entirely.
