Assessment 01

Four owners, a dozen brands

Only EE, O2, Three and Vodafone own infrastructure; everyone else resells.

EEFormed 2010 from Orange and T-Mobile; BT Group
O2BT Cellnet originally; O2 from 2002; Virgin Media O2 from 2021
ThreeEntered 2003 as the data-first challenger
VodafoneAmong the longest established
The case for

Wholesale competition gives consumers a dozen price points on four networks, and makes coverage testing cheap.

The case against

It also confuses people, who assume a cheaper brand means a worse network, or complain to the wrong company entirely.

The bottom line

Coverage comes from the host; price, service and complaints belong to the brand billing you.

If you'd rather ask a person

We are independent: nothing for sale, no access to your account, and we will never ask you for a security code. We will read an offer with you, explain a clause, or talk a switch through.

Assessment 02

Network generations

2G, 3G, 4G, 5G and standalone 5G.

The case for

Each generation freed spectrum and improved service for the majority — 3G's withdrawal in 2024 and 2025 released capacity for 4G and 5G.

The case against

Switch-offs retired working handsets, and standalone 5G still needs recent devices and live areas to deliver anything.

The bottom line

Enable 4G Calling on every handset in the house, and check both device support and local availability before paying extra for 5G+.

Assessment 03

The 2025 consolidation

Three and Vodafone combining into VodafoneThree.

The case for

Substantial investment into mast consolidation, aimed largely at the weakest postcodes on both estates.

The case against

Merger years are unsettled, and the announcement produced a persistent fraud campaign claiming plans must be “migrated”.

The bottom line

Re-check coverage annually while it runs, and treat any urgent migration call as fraud without exception.
