List the actual tasks
Consider meetings, uploads, cloud synchronization, VPN connections and other household devices. A laptop may download updates or synchronize files in the background. Check the mobile plan's tethering allowance and behavior after any high-speed limit.
Unlimited phone data does not answer these questions. A dedicated hotspot product can also have a separate allowance and device requirement. Do not insert a phone SIM into a router without checking eligibility.
Test a realistic session
Run a representative work task at the intended location and time. Check upload stability and latency, not just peak download speed. Keep the phone or hotspot ventilated and supplied with power in accordance with its instructions.
If performance deteriorates, distinguish a weak cellular connection from the local Wi-Fi link to the laptop. Test fewer connected devices and inspect background usage. Restore any changed settings when the diagnostic test is finished.
Plan for interruptions
A single mobile connection is not an uptime commitment. If a missed meeting has serious consequences, consider an independent backup connection and know how to use it. Compare a dedicated home service for continuous use, including its address availability, equipment and data policy.
