Check eligibility with the receiving provider
Have the new provider confirm that the number can be transferred. Account ownership, number type and service circumstances can matter. Use the existing provider's official process to obtain the account number and required transfer credentials.
Keep the existing service active while the transfer is in progress. The FCC advises consumers to initiate service with the new provider before terminating the old service. An unpaid balance does not remove the obligation to pay, even where number-porting rights apply.
Keep credentials and timing under control
A number-transfer PIN can differ from the account login or ordinary security PIN. Obtain it only through an authenticated provider channel and check its validity. Do not share it with this website or an unsolicited caller.
Timing varies by transfer type and whether the submitted details match. A temporary period of split calling or messaging can occur. Ask the receiving provider for the actual status instead of assuming the SIM installation means the port is complete.
Test the number, not just the phone
Call the number from another network and make an outgoing call. Test SMS, voicemail and important account-verification messages. Re-register messaging services if the device instructions require it.
After completion, inspect the final account and any remaining lines or equipment. Porting is a number-routing process, not a full cancellation service for a household bundle.
