SIM & eSIM

What is a physical SIM?

A removable card identifies a mobile subscription to the network. It still needs activation and a compatible device. It is not a backup of everything on your phone.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM is a subscription provisioned digitally on supported hardware. The provider and exact device must support the activation method; a carrier lock can still prevent use.

Can I store several eSIM profiles?

Many supported phones can store several profiles, but the number active at once varies by model. Check the manufacturer's instructions and choose voice and data defaults deliberately.

Should I delete my old eSIM first?

Do not delete a working profile as a routine first step. Follow the provider's transfer instructions and test the replacement before removing access you may still need.

Can I reuse an activation QR code?

Not necessarily. A code can be single-use or time-limited. Ask the provider for the correct replacement or transfer procedure instead of repeatedly scanning an old image.

Does a travel eSIM include a phone number?

Some travel products are data-only. Read the product details before relying on ordinary calls or SMS. Internet messaging is different from a mobile voice-and-text service.

Devices

What does unlocked mean?

It means a carrier restriction on using another eligible service has been removed. Unlocking does not guarantee compatibility or settle an outstanding phone balance.

How do I check compatibility?

Use the intended provider's official tool with the precise model or IMEI when requested. Check important features such as voice, Wi-Fi calling and eSIM as well as data.

Is an IMEI a password?

No; it identifies a device. Still, use it only with trusted services and avoid posting it publicly. It does not replace account authorization or a transfer credential.

Can I bring a used phone?

Possibly, if it is legitimately owned, supported and free of restrictions that prevent activation. Check lock status, condition and return rights before relying on it.

Does financing stop when I switch?

Not automatically. A number transfer does not erase a handset balance. Review the finance agreement and the consequences for future promotional credits before leaving.

What should I keep after a trade-in?

Keep the terms, shipping receipt, tracking and acceptance record. Check that any expected bill credits appear and understand their continuing eligibility conditions.

Plans

What is prepaid?

Payment generally funds a future service period. Check the renewal date and what happens when payment or an allowance runs out, especially if keeping the number matters.

What is postpaid?

Service is billed under an ongoing account arrangement. The bill may combine airtime, device payments, extras and adjustments; it does not automatically include every feature.

Does AutoPay mean a plan is postpaid?

No. Prepaid plans can renew automatically too. Read the service agreement and payment timing rather than using the payment method to classify the plan.

What does unlimited data mean?

Its meaning is defined by the plan. Phone data, high-speed hotspot, video, roaming and busy-network treatment can have separate limits or conditions.

What is a hotspot?

It shares a cellular connection with another device over Wi-Fi, USB or another supported method. Tethering can have a different allowance from ordinary phone data.

What is data prioritization?

It describes how traffic is treated when resources are contested. It differs from a fixed speed limit, although either can affect a task's performance.

Why is my phone's usage meter different?

The device and provider may use different time windows, reporting delays or measurement methods. The provider's account rules determine the service allowance.

Can a family member take their number away?

Often a transfer is possible, but ownership and authorization matter. Check the provider's process and the effect on the remaining household lines before starting.

Networks

What is an MVNO?

An alternative mobile provider can obtain access to another company's network while offering its own plans, account and support. Arrangements vary, so check the actual service.

Does every provider own a nationwide network?

No. Some operate radio networks, some use wholesale access, and some arrangements are hybrid. Corporate acquisitions can also change the relationship over time.

Will two brands on one network perform identically?

Not necessarily. Plan priority, supported devices, roaming and features can differ. Compare the actual line and terms instead of assuming shared infrastructure means identical service.

Is UScellular an unrelated fourth nationwide operator?

That is not an accurate current shorthand. T-Mobile completed acquisition of UScellular's wireless operations in August 2025. Existing customers should follow their account-specific transition information.

Does a provider with network choices use them all at once?

Not necessarily. Changing a profile or SIM can be a separate account process. Confirm how the service works instead of assuming automatic simultaneous access.

Coverage

What is 5G?

It is a generation of mobile network technology. Supported hardware, local deployment, radio conditions and the plan affect the features and performance available.

Why does coverage change indoors?

Walls, insulation, glass, terrain and the building's position can weaken radio signals. Map estimates do not guarantee reception in each room.

Why are data speeds slow with full bars?

Bars do not measure all network capacity or the application's server. Congestion, a plan rule, Wi-Fi or one failing app can produce slow results.

Does a coverage map guarantee service?

No. Read the map's assumptions and test important locations where practical. Indoor performance, device support and local conditions can differ from a broad estimate.

Does this website show live outages?

No. The troubleshooting guide explains possible causes. Check the provider's current official status information before treating a problem as a confirmed outage.

Travel

What is domestic roaming?

It is use of a partner network within the domestic service area under the plan's terms. It should not be assumed identical across brands sharing infrastructure.

What is international roaming?

It is use of service on a network abroad. Eligibility, calls, messages and data depend on the plan and destination, with possible additional charges.

Is calling abroad the same as roaming?

No. Calling another country from home is international calling. Using the phone while you are abroad is roaming; the plan can treat them differently.

Is Wi-Fi calling always included abroad?

Do not assume so. The provider's rules can depend on the destination and number called. Check the exact treatment before making calls.

Do country inclusions cover ships and aircraft?

Not necessarily. Onboard networks can have separate terms. Check them specifically rather than relying on ordinary land-based destination coverage.

Switching

What is number porting?

It moves a number between eligible services. It does not transfer phone files, unlock hardware or cancel every separate product on an old account.

What details might a port require?

The receiving provider may need matching account information and a current transfer credential from the old provider. Obtain these securely and follow the specific instructions.

Should I cancel the old line before porting?

Keep it active while the receiving provider completes the transfer. Premature cancellation can complicate number retention. Review separate products after the port.

How long will a port take?

Timing depends on the transfer type and whether the details match. Ask the receiving provider for the actual status; SIM installation alone does not prove completion.

Will a port erase an unpaid balance?

No. Porting rights and payment obligations are separate. Check the final bill and any remaining handset or equipment commitments.

Internet

Is Wi-Fi the same as broadband?

No. Wi-Fi connects devices locally to a router; broadband is the access connection beyond it. A room with poor Wi-Fi does not automatically need a new broadband plan.

What is fixed wireless?

A gateway connects over radio rather than a fiber or cable access line. Availability, placement and product terms are specific to the address and service.

Does mobile coverage prove home-internet eligibility?

No. A fixed-wireless home product can have its own capacity and address requirements even where a phone receives a signal.

Can a mesh router fix every slow connection?

No. It can improve local Wi-Fi reach, but cannot create capacity that the underlying internet connection does not supply.

Guidance

Is this an official carrier support line?

No. The contact belongs to this independent information resource. We cannot access accounts, restore service, take payments or perform transfers for providers.

Is calling the guidance number free?

The guidance has no service fee. The number is in the UK, so normal or international call charges may apply. It is not a freephone number.

Do I need to call to read the guides?

No. All information is available without calling, creating an account or submitting personal details.

What should I never share with an adviser?

Do not share passwords, one-time codes, transfer PINs, activation QR codes, payment details or identity documents. General explanations do not require carrier account access.
