Check travel service before departure

International calling, domestic roaming and international roaming are different features.

Identify where the phone will be used

Calling another country from the United States is international calling. Roaming means using a partner network away from the home network, which can be domestic or international. Check the exact plan and destination rather than a broad network claim.

Ships, aircraft and border areas deserve particular attention. A phone can attach to a network you did not expect. Review the provider's terms for calls, outgoing texts, incoming activity and data separately.

Prepare a travel configuration

Confirm that roaming is available and whether an option must be activated. Note any usage limits, time periods and extended-travel conditions. Keep account recovery accessible before leaving.

If using a travel SIM or eSIM, check whether it supplies data only and whether the phone is unlocked. Set the intended data line and review automatic switching. Keeping the usual line enabled can still have implications for calls and messages.

Check Wi-Fi calling and return settings

Wi-Fi calling is not automatically free for every destination or call. Read how the provider treats calls made abroad over Wi-Fi. The other party's country and number type can matter.

After travel, review usage and any add-on renewal. Restore the normal data-line settings deliberately. If service fails overseas, note the destination, selected network, SIM state and account eligibility before changing advanced settings.
